FACT SHEET

The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Inc. (TAPS) is America's national non-profit Veteran Service Organization made up of, and providing services at no cost to, all those who have suffered the loss of a loved one in the Armed Forces. The heart of TAPS is its national military survivor peer support network called SurvivorLINK, which brings together the families, friends and coworkers of those who are suffering a loss. TAPS also offers bereavement counseling referral, provides case worker assistance that carries the work of the casualty assistance officers into the future, hosts the nation's only annual National Military Survivor Seminar and Youth Gathering, publishes a quarterly journal mailed at no charge to survivors and care givers, maintains a comprehensive website at www.taps.org, and offers a toll-free crisis and information lines available 24 hours daily through 1-800-959-TAPS (8277) or on e-mail TAPS at [email protected]. TAPS offers total care and support for the military family experiencing a casualty.

·        Peer support: Those who have lost a loved one in the military may become part of the TAPS national survivor network. These family members and friends share their pain and fears in a safe and supportive environment, and help each other heal.

·        Crisis Intervention: A network of trained crisis response professionals is now on call in each state 24 hours a day through 1-800-368-8277. They bring a wealth of compassion and experience to critical incident stress and trauma, and are there to help survivors understand the reactions they are having to their sudden loss.

·        Case Workers: Assistance such as that offered by Casualty Officers immediately after a death is provided by TAPS long after the official file has been closed. For families, tracking information through an often complicated bureaucracy can be challenging on a good day, and under emotional stress, becomes overwhelming. TAPS has caseworkers who can help.

·        Grief Counseling: We are a member of the Association of Death Education and Counseling and the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists, and are able to offer referral to the very best bereavement counselors and support groups throughout the nation.

TAPS is here for you, please call on us!
